I was interested in finding out about Escrick as my Great Great Grandfather James FOX lived in the village at the time of the 1871 census. Dwelling was stated as cottage in the Park. This information was passon on but did not include his occupation. James FOX was was 31 years old, a widower, born Stratton Dorset, children were Flora age 6 born Stratton Dorset, John age 3 born Escrick, Eglah age 2 born Escrick. Timma/Timna FOOKS age 24 Homemaker was also part of the family as Timma/Timna was John's sister-in-law. His wife Leonora Sophia FOX (nee FOOKS) died 1870 York (Escrick?) aged 26 years. In the 1881 census James and family are in Dunnichen Forfar Angus Scotland. James has a new wife Alice and another daughter Martha Elizabeth who is aged 6 born England in this census. James is a game keeper. I have found this website very informitive about village life and thank you for providing it so people anywhere in the world can learn about Escrick. I have other information about Escrick via a 'google' search including Bulmer's Geographical and Historical information from the year 1892 which is also very interesting.
