Thefts from vehicles - Escrick - Fri 22nd November

Between 1730hrs and 1850hrs on 22/11/19, two vehicles were broken in to whilst they were parked at a hotel on Main Street in Escrick.
The owners returned to find that vehicle windows had been smashed and items including a handbag, sat nav and small change had been stolen from within.
Please remain vigilant with vehicle security and remove all valuables from display.

Free support for older Veterans - ends March 2020

Do you know anyone in your village who is in their 80s and did National Service or who is over 65 and served in the regular Armed Forces?
If so, there is now limited time for them to access the free advice and support available through the Ex Forces Support North Yorkshire project: https://communityfirstyorkshire.org.uk/projects/ex-forces-support-north-yorkshire-aged-veterans-fund/
The project offers free home well-being visits (which include fitting grab rails, key safes, mobility aids, draught proofing etc as well as giving advice on utility bills and help with heating systems). It also runs day trips and social activities, gives advice on finances, support for carers, and signposting to other support services.
Parish Council vacancy, November 2019

We now have four vacancies for Parish Councillors in Escrick.
Any adult resident of the Parish can apply to be a Parish Councillor. The main commitment is to attend the monthly Parish Council meetings (usually with a bit of background reading before), albeit there is also opportunity to get involved in other working groups if you have more time available.
The Parish Council oversees several local amenities, and makes representations on behalf of residents to other bodies. More information about the Parish Council's activities can be found on our website: https://www.escrick.org/council/about-parish-council/

Diwali, Halloween, Bonfire night

Diwali
This year the main Diwali celebrations fall on Sunday 27th October - and it is likely that some residents will celebrate with fireworks (which are legally permitted until 1am on Diwali). Those residents with pets may wish to keep them indoors.

Halloween
Many children enjoy taking part in 'trick or treat' activities on Halloween (Thursday 31st October), and many residents gladly take part sharing treats. However, not everyone welcomes visitors, including those trying to get small children to sleep, or those who find answering the door difficult.
The general etiquette is that those households willing to partake leave a pumpkin on prominent display, and those that would rather be left in peace don't. Please consider this etiquette if taking part.

Bonfire night
Bonfire night (5th Nov) falls on a Tuesday this year, and it is likely that some residents will let off fireworks on Friday 1st, Saturday 2nd, and Tuesday 5th November. Those residents with pets may wish to keep them indoors on these dates.
We are aware that some residents object to private firework displays - but there is no requirement for them to be pre-notified, and (providing they are undertaken lawfully) no ability for the Parish Council to prevent them. It might be considered good manners, however, to let your neighbours know in advance if you are planning a display, particularly if they have pets. AGE UK BUS SERVICE

Age UK Selby District is hoping to set up a door to door shopping service in Escrick.
They have an 11 seater minibus which can collect residents from the village and transport them to a supermarket (possibly Waitrose or Morrisons on Foss Islands Road) on either a Monday or Tuesday each week. The driver picks up at each client’s home and delivers them to the supermarket where they would get approx 1hr to complete their shopping before the return journey home. The driver helps load the bags onto the bus and carries the shopping into the house. The cost of the service is £5 for the return journey. Escrick Parish Council:
Highways:
A19/Skipwith Road junction scheme: At the time of writing we are waiting for the final proposal from North Yorkshire County Council, which is required to support our application for authority to borrow the funds for the scheme. This has taken longer than expected, but we continue to chase this along.
Vehicle activated speed sign: We have received a £1000 grant from North Yorkshire County Council towards the cost of a vehicle activated speed sign (approximately a third of the total cost). The sign will initially be located on Skipwith Road in the vicinity of the bridge, alternating between a southbound and northbound orientation. We can consider installing further mounting posts elsewhere in the village in future.
Street sweeping and tidying:
The Parish Council has a small budget to pay someone to undertake seasonal street sweeping on key pavements and footpaths in the village, and locations such as the bus shelter. If you may interested in this work, please contact Kevin Moran: Cllr.Moran@escrick.org
New Clerk:
We welcome Sally Look as the new Parish Council Clerk, following the resignation of the previous clerk for personal reasons in the summer.
Planning:
Caravan / leisure park at former North Selby mine site: The proposed site has been reduced in scale, mitigating several of the concerns previously raised by the Parish Council. The Parish Council will continue to push for further mitigations to improve the quality of the proposals
Clay extraction west of business park: A planning application has been submitted for the phased ‘quarrying’ of clay from a 150 acre site north and west of the business park, over a period of 20 – 30 years from 2023. The Parish Council has raised concerns about the impact on highways (forecast ~ 100 additional HGV entries/exits per day), the loss of agricultural land and disruption from noise/dust. The Council is also seeking robust assurances that unlike other sites in the district that timely restoration will be enforced

Neighbourhood Development Plan - October workshop

The NDP project is developing an Neighbourhood Development Plan, which will form part of the local planning policy and will influence how Escrick develops over the next 10 - 15 years.

As a next stage in the process we are holding a drop-in workshop on Sunday 20th October between 3pm and 4.30pm in the village hall.
This session will focus on the areas of:
- Transport and Movement
- Community and Facilities
This is an opportunity to see the emerging issues and the options identified for consideration. This is an informal and interactive session, with the opportunity for all to contribute.

As Maggie works on launching a competing business, she also helps her sisters free themselves of their domineering father.

Selby station redevelopment consultation

Selby District Council has got big ambitions for the area around Selby station.
They want to make it easier to get to and from the station, to create new links to development sites in the town centre and to open up the space between the station and the Abbey to make arriving by train and bus into Selby a special experience.
The District Council will be bidding for some money from central government to help make this happen.
Before they submit their detailed funding bid, they want to hear from you. Check out their plans and tell them what you think.
